Question

What does a Pueblo house look like?

A Pueblo house is a multi-story, terraced earthen block of stacked rooms with thick mud-plastered walls and flat roofs. Timber vigas project from the upper levels. Traditional inhabited Pueblos like Taos and Acoma rise three to five stories using setbacks rather than stairs. Residents access upper rooms by ladder. Wall surfaces are hand-finished and re-mudded annually, giving them an undulating, organic skin. Window and door openings are small and deeply set; bread ovens called hornos sit in courtyards. Taos Pueblo, built around AD 1000–1450, is the oldest continuously inhabited example in North America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
